Wrenthorpe Rangers 0 Mapplewell Mavericks 5
After last week's cup triumph it was back to
league action for Wrenthorpe. Maybe last week's success had made the team
complacent but whatever it was the Wrens were about to get a shock. Mapplewell
set off at a great pace and before the Wrens could pause for breath they found
themselves four goals down. Towards the end of the first half Wrenthorpe started
to try and pull it round a bit but faced an up hill struggle. Will Best went
close with a bullet header from a Thomas Bragg corner but the Mapplewell goalie
somehow kept it out. Matthew Lumb battled hard in midfield and Dane Tintor
worked hard up front but the Wrens could make little impression on a strong
Mapplewell outfit. After the break Wrenthorpe seemed to come out with a bit more
determination. Joe Holley was on fine form in the nets and Aidan Cosimini
battled hard in midfield but unfortunately it was all to no avail. As the Wrens
pushed forward Mapplewell caught Wrenthorpe on the break to add their fifth and
final goal and bring the curtain down on what was a poor game for the Wrens.

Wrenthorpe Rangers 2 Mapplewell Mavericks 7
As soon as the second game kicked off it looked
like it was going to be a repeat of the first. Once again Mapplewell went
steaming into a four goal lead to leave the Wrens shell shocked. This time
however there were the faint signs of a Wrenthorpe fight back . Will Steele
lifted the Wrens spirits when he dribbled past three Mapplewell players before
neatly tucking the ball away to give Wrenthorpe their first of the match .
Wrenthorpe seemed to regroup and settle down a bit after this and the game
looked much more evenly balanced than it had done at first After the half time
restart Mapplewell pounced again and as they surged forward a hard shot took a
cruel deflection off of a Wrenthorpe player to give them their fifth of the
match. Wrenthorpe fought back again and five minutes later a neat through ball
by Yosef Abebe found James Hobson in the Mapplewell box allowing him to tap home
Wrenthorpe's second. Despite some hard work by Emily Caines and Sam Holley it
seemed that little could be done to stop the Mapplewell crew as they pushed
forward again and added another two goals before the final whistle. After last
weeks euphoria this proved to be a rude awakening for the Wrens and something to
think about for the last game of the season. |
